Father Michael Niemczak, son of Anthony and Natalia Niemczak, was ordained on Saturday, May 21, in the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi in Santa Fe, NM, for the Archdiocese of Santa Fe.
Father Michael celebrated one of his Masses of Thanksgiving on Sunday, May 24, in Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Convent Chapel, Rio Rancho, NM. In his homily, he shared that he had visited the sisters since he was seven years old and he mentioned by name SM Angelica Slonina, Sister Jeanne Marie Slonina, and SM Genevieve Ryskiewicz.
Father Michael said that, at an early age, he wanted to be a priest and that he always felt the support of the sisters, so he wanted to say “Thank you” with a Mass of Thanksgiving.
Organist S Agnes Marie Lewandowski chose “Sing a New Song” as the entrance hymn. Father Michael picked up on this responsorial theme and reminded the gathered congregation to “Sing a new song” every day of their lives — that like Mary, we need to give something new and fresh each day to God by living fully and beautifully each moment of our lives.
After Mass, Father Michael and his parents joined the sisters and friars for breakfast. The following week, he returned to Rome for final exams. He will then travel to Poland to celebrate a Mass of Thanksgiving at the parish of Grandma Niemczak. He plans to visit the Holy Land and minister in New Mexico during the summer before returning to Rome for biblical studies.
SM Dorothy Young, local minister, said, “Everyone delighted in sharing at all the tables of the Lord: Word, Eucharist and breakfast.”
